We are often asked, “What makes Chancy Drugs so different from all the other drug stores I’ve been to?” Any pharmacy can count your medicine, label the vial, and process your insurance claim, but our vision is much bigger than simply delivering a product. At Chancy Drugs we really are here to meet your needs and our immunization program is one way that we can do just that.
Immunizations represent modern medical scientific breakthrough that allow us to prevent or minimize certain illnesses. You have probably heard the proverbial saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”, and we believe in and practice this principle at Chancy Drugs. Our pharmacists are trained experts in certain immunizations and we can work with you and your doctor to help decide which ones are right for you.
We currently offer three vaccines that can be administered on-site at your local Chancy Drug store.
- Flu Shots
The flu is caused by the influenza virus and it is much more serious than a common cold. Thousands of people in the United States are infected every year with the flu, and many high risk patients (including the elderly and those with chronic illnesses like diabetes and asthma) actually die. Each year the influenza virus can change and different strains become dominant and for this reason, a particular vaccine only works for about a year. The Centers for Disease Control {link to the CDC www.cdc.gov .} recommend an annual flu shot for almost everyone to protect against the most prevalent flu strains that year.
This vaccination is strongly recommended for certain high risk groups:
- Anyone with chronic conditions, like diabetes, heart disease, asthma, immune deficiency, emphysema, COPD, etc.
- Anyone working in the healthcare field
- All public workers such as school employees, postal works and so-forth
- Children
- Anyone over the age of 65
Flu shots are covered by most Medicare Part B plans. Chancy Drugs will file the Medicare paperwork for you.

- Zostavax (for Shingles)
If you have witnessed a friend or family member suffer from shingles, you are well aware of the pain and misery that many patients experience. Shingles are caused by a re-emergence of the chicken pox virus later on in life. (Once you have been exposed to Chickenpox, that virus never leaves your body. It lies dormant in the nerve endings and can sometimes re-surface as shingles.)
To further complicate the issue, sometimes the damage to nerve endings caused by shingles can be permanent, leading to a condition known as post-Herpotic Neuralgia (PNH) which is very painful and can last a lifetime.
The good news is that a vaccine called Zostavax is now available for patients over the age of 60. This immunization can lower your risk of getting shingles and all its complications. Our pharmacists at Chancy Drugs are trained experts and they can administer this vaccination on-site. We will work together with you and your physician to help decide if Zostavax is right for you.
